About the Granitos Stitch
The Granitos Stitch is a bold and plump stitch created by layers of Straight Stitches laid on top of each other. ‘Granitos‘ means ‘little grains’ in Spanish, from where this name must have been derived. The shape of this stitch resembles a grain of rice. Granitos Stitch is used in the Chikkankari Work, an embroidery from India, to decorate around the Paisley patterns. This stitch is super easy to work and can be used in isolation or in a scattered form to create a textured filling. I find this particularly lovely to make quick and small flower petals and leaves.
How to do the Granitos Stitch
You must note that the Straight Stitches are worked between the same two stitch points every time. At times, it can be confused with the Lazy Daisy Stitch until looked at closely.
Fig 1: Make a single Straight Stitch between two stitch points, as shown. | Fig 2: Now, work another Straight Stitch between the exact same stitch points. |
Fig 3: Lay it on one side of the first stitch to gain some width. | Fig 4: Again, make another Straight Stitch between the same stitch points and nudge that stitch to the other side. You may stop the stitch here, or continue to make more Straight Stitches for a plumper look. |
Fig 5: I made two more (five in all) stitches to create this super embossed Granitos Stitch. |
