About the Gut Raincoat Stitch
While working on the 2nd edition of our hand embroidery ebook, I ran thorough research to realize that this stitch variation is a technique used by the people of the circumpolar region to secure the edges of their raincoats made of gut skin. This stitch made it waterproof! No prizes for guessing why I decided to name this decorative variation the Gut Raincoat Stitch. This simple yet highly decorative stitch is a clever adaptation that makes a great border pattern.
How to do the Gut Raincoat Stitch
You need to know how to create a foundation using the Stepped Running Stitch.
Fig 1: Lay the foundation by doing the Stepped Running Stitch, as illustrated.
Fig 2: Take another thread and needle out from near A and pass it under A and W without plucking the fabric underneath. Turn the needle around and pass the thread under X and A. | Fig 3: Now, pass the needle under B and X without plucking the fabric underneath. Continue this pattern of action for the remaining stretch of the stepped running stitch.
Fig 4: A finished line of this variety would look like this. The serpentine visual makes it suitable for edging and border designs.
