Moss Stitch is also known as
Cross and Twist Stitch [EN].
About the Moss Stitch
The Moss Stitch is an interesting variation that involves the Cross Stitch. Using a twist of the thread, the simple Cross Stitch is given a pretty look. This twisting is made easy using your other hand. The Moss Stitch can be scattered around to create textures on the pattern and be used beautifully on even-weave fabric.
How to do the Moss Stitch
Fig 1: Make a Cross Stitch between A, B, C, and D. | Fig 2: Then, come out from E, a point slightly above A and D. |
Fig 3: Now, take the working thread emerging from point E over your finger as shown. | Fig 4: Twist the thread by turning around your finger to create a crossed loop like this. |
Fig 5: Take your finger out leaving the twisted loop in place. Next, pass the needle under the intersection of the cross as shown. The twisted loop should be under the needle. | Fig 6: Pull out the needle to tighten the loop around the intersection of the cross. You can then take the needle into the fabric at point F. |
Fig 7: The finished Moss Stitch will look like this. |
