Double Cross Stitch

Double Cross Stitch is also known as

Leviathan stitch, Smyrna cross stitch [EN], Punto de cruz doble [ES], Point croix double [FR], Doppelter Kreuzstich [DE],  Punto croce doppio [IT], dobbelt korssting [NO].

About the Double Cross Stitch

Double cross stitches are generally used as filler stitches. It is effortless to make with one cross stitch done diagonally over the other. Knowing the Cross Stitch before you begin with this stitch is an advantage. I will work between two stitch lines to illustrate this lesson.

How to do the Double Cross Stitch

Fig 1: Make a Cross Stitch between A,B,C,D.
We continue to make another cross over this one. So, bring the needle out through E.
Fig 2: Now, take the needle in through F, to bring it out through G, as illustrated.
Fig 3: Finish the stitch to get a star-like shape. Fig 4: Repeat the process to make a series of stars like this. Make sure to follow the same sequence for each star to maintain uniformity.

Sara. Loved yr work. hv a doubt. when doing double cross stitch. Do I have to finish one by one? or is there a method like the single cross stich to do it in a sequence. Please help…rgds

    • sarah says:

      Dear Rosana,
Here, I have done each double cross stitch at a time. But, there is no hard and fast rule regarding this, if you wish, you can do all the diagonals first, then the other diagonal stitch on the return journey, then the horizontal stitches, and then the verticals on the journey back. This becomes easier when done on even weave cloth. I hope you understood. 🙂

    Hi Sarah,
I attempted to do cross stitch today. I did the traditional cross stitch….completing a rectangular border.
When I look at patterns I am amazed at the intricate details. To ensure that i am getting it right do i need to draw the outline on the material first? If I stick to it I know that I will get it right.
Your embroidery tutorials are really good and make it all seem so easy.

      Dear Basdai,

My suggestion would be that you do not draw on the fabric, but count the ‘boxes’. That is the appropriate way of doing cross stitch. One reason why cross stitch is popular is because it needs just filling of the fabric using crosses, by just counting! Every cross stitch pattern will have guide of counts.
      I hope this helps. 🙂

hi sarah..ur website is really wonder ful and very helpful.i have a doubt regarding thread choice.what kind of threads r there and which threads r bestr for embroidery.?it will be great help.

    • sarah says:

      Dear Sumalatha,

Thank you. Usually we use pearl cotton or the normal cotton embrodiery floss (anchor brand) for embroidery. Pearl cotton is a non divisible thread that comes in various thicknesses. The normal cotton embroidery thread is divisible, made up of 6 strands. In this illustration, I have used two strands of normal cotton floss.
Using pearl cotton might be hassle free and easier for beginners. But, ultimately, the choice all depends much on what you want to embrodier, how you want it to look and the fabric you are using.
