How to do the Rumanian Couching
If you want to fill a more prominent space without having the threads come off all loose, the Rumanian Couching must be an excellent way to do it. This stitch requires the pattern to be divided into different sections. The laid threads would be couched with long diagonal stitches. We use the same thread continuously to lay and couch simultaneously, unlike in Surface Couching. These diagonal Couching Stitches form an overlay pattern. Let’s work on a triangle pattern to understand better.
Fig 1: Divide the pattern into vertical sections. Here each smaller section has been marked as X and Y on its Stitch line. Bring the thread out from A and in through B. Bring it up again from the first Y, as shown. | Fig 2: Then, take the needle in through X from the other side of the stitch, as shown. Again come out from Y from the top side of the stitch. |
Fig 3: Follow the markings to couch down the thread laid between A and B. The smaller sections will have the couched thread, so, try not to make it too wide. | Fig 4: Once you finish one row, continue to lay another thread at the stretch and couch it down in the smaller sections. |
Fig 5: Halfway through, you will see a weave pattern emerge like this. | Fig 6: When the pattern is finished, it will look filled with overlaying patterns of the vertical sections we made. |
