Stitch leaves using the Straight Stitch.
Have you ever wondered how to use the simple Straight Stitch in hand embroidery? Here is a great example! This pattern is inspired by the pine leaves. Here, I have used a pair of Straight Stitches to create a sort of ‘V’ to make the pointy leaves. The Straight Stitch is great to put together to make various patterns as you desire. It is a simple stitch, the simplest of all, and it allows you to get creative with it! This simple leaf pattern can be finished in just about 15 minutes!
Fig 1: Get your fabric, hoops, and threads ready. | Fig 2: Start by making a single Straight Stitch. I like starting from the top of the leaf, but you can start from any end. |
Fig 3: Now you stitch another Straight Stitch to form a sort of ‘V’. | Fig 4: Keep making these pairs of Straight Stitches. It is as simple as that. |
Fig 5: Done with both the leaves. | Fig 6: Now, I stitch the stem with the Stem Stitch. |
Fig 7: My two simple leaves are ready in no time! |
TIPS to make your leaf perfect:
- You can stitch the stem first to make sure the leaves sit closer to the stitched stem.
- Watch the length of the Straight Stitches. Maintain a pattern and consistency.

Wow… It’s so simple yet so beautiful and delicate..! Loved it. Thank you Dear. 😊
I too loved its delicate look. Thank you.! 💕
Just curious. What sort of pen do you use to draw your figure first?
Hi Mary,
It’s an air soluble pen. It lasts a day or two on the fabric. ☺️
Thank you what do you know about Brazilian embroidery ?
Hi Lesley. Brazilian embroidery is a dimensional embroidery, which means most of the stitches used are dimensional with a higher profile and/or ‘detached’ nature. For example, the Bullion Knots, the Cast-on Stitch, the Buttonhole Wheel Cup, etc. It is traditionally stitched using a kind of rayon thread but is equally possible with cotton floss. ☺️
Yet another lovely easy to follow tutorial ! I do enjoy seeing your work and am trying out various embroidery stitches on felt. Thank you.
Thank you, Lesley! 🙂 I love your work! It’s beautiful.
