Kamal Kadai – in modern hand embroidery
It is great fun to use Kamal Kadai technique over modern embroidery. It is possible to combine the weaving technique with other stitches that can pose a favourable foundation. This page will give you a few such ideas and encourage you to create your own inspired variations. 😊
#1 Using Long Tailed Daisy as the foundation
Fig 1: Stitch Long Tailed Daisies in such a way that the chain of the stitch forms the top of the flower. | Fig 2: Use the ‘tail’ of the Long Tailed Daisy as the foundation to weave the flower. Do not weave over the chains. |
Fig 3: Your flowers will look like this. Use different shades of the same colour for a beautiful effect. | Fig 4: Stitch the stems and the leaves, and your pattern is done! |
#2 using Pistil Stitch as the foundation
Fig 1: Stitch Pistil Stitch in such a way that the knots of the stitch make the edge of the flower petals. | Fig 2: I have used a foundation of three stitches for a petal/ flower. |
Fig 3: Weave through the three stitches at a time. I have used 6 strands to give it a ‘cute’ look. | Fig 4: The finished flower looks like this. |
#3 using Buttonhole Wheel Stitch as the foundation
Fig 1: Make a Buttonhole Wheel in such a way that you will have enough spokes to weave petals equally. I am making a Buttonhole Wheel of 16 spokes. | Fig 2: I can weave 4 petals if I weave through 4 spokes at a time. |
Fig 3: Once the petals are all done, I will embellish it with some French Knots. | Fig 4: I have also made a bud with 4 spokes on the side. |
